How to Alleviate Indigestion in Just 10 Minutes

December 25, 2022

Experiencing indigestion can be extremely uncomfortable, but the good news is that you can take steps to reduce or eliminate the symptoms.

physical activity can help indigestion

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to manage your indigestion and find relief.

Avoid Eating Too Much At Once

Overeating can lead to indigestion, so avoiding eating large amounts at once is best.

Eating slowly and having smaller portions will give your digestive system enough time to process the food more easily, which will lead to fewer problems ensuing afterwards. Try not to snack too close to meal times either, as this can make digestion more difficult.

some herbal teas can relieve indigestion

Drink herbal tea with Peppermint and Chamomile

Brewing a herbal tea and adding a pinch of peppermint or chamomile is a great way to soothe the digestive tract, reduce nausea, and reduce the feeling of fullness caused by indigestion.

Make sure you steep your herbs in hot water for between 3 and 6 minutes before drinking it for the best results. If you don’t have any access to these herbs, ginger tea may also be useful for soothing your stomach.

Antacids or other Over-the-Counter Medication

Try taking an antacid or other over-the-counter medication.
Certain over-the-counter medications can be effective in reducing the effects of indigestion.

Antacids, for instance, neutralise stomach acids and can help prevent or reduce acid reflux.

If you have trouble with motion sickness, taking an antacid before a long journey can also help relieve symptoms. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you would like to explore this option further.

Physical Activity

Take a walk after eating to help your body digest food more quickly.
Getting your blood flowing can often provide quick relief when you have indigestion.

Taking a brisk walk or light jog after eating –– especially a large meal –– can help improve digestion by speeding up the process of food leaving your stomach and entering the small intestine.

You should also avoid lying down after eating to prevent the buildup of gastric acids in your stomach. Just 10 minutes of walking could be all it takes to give you some much-needed relief.

Maintain Proper Posture

Make sure you’re sitting upright when you eat and maintain proper posture afterwards.
Proper posture is key when it comes to combating indigestion. When sitting at the table, sit up straight and make sure your feet are flat on the ground.

After eating, maintain good posture as much as possible, not just when you’re sitting down. Slouching or bending over reduces blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract, making digestion much tougher for your body.
