How To Help A Loved One Through A Tough Time
August 24, 2024
Nobody likes to see a friend or loved one struggling. But, when they are facing significant mental health issues, it can be difficult to know how to help.
Fortunately, there are many ways you can reach out to your loved one during this time, making it clear that you are there to support them no matter what.

One of the easiest ways to support a loved one through tough times is to show up consistently—on their good and bad days.
This shows them that you are as good as your word and that you are always there to support them should they need a hand.
In turn, this means that they’ll feel more comfortable opening up in the future.
When you are caught up in your emotions, it can be difficult to find your way out, even if there is a wealth of resources available to you.
As such, you could be of great use to your friend by directing them toward the services or resources that will best support them.
For example, if they are currently showing signs of disordered eating, then you may want to connect them with an experienced therapist.
Or they can receive inpatient or outpatient treatment at local eating disorder treatment facilities.
Many people struggling with their mental health believe that talking about how they feel will lead to judgment from those around them.
This is especially true if they are already acting out of character.
As such, it is important that you are as empathetic as possible during your interactions.
Let them know that they can open up to you in whatever way they see fit without worrying about your perception of them changing.
Again, this will make it easier for them to open up and say what is really on their mind rather than sugar coating it for your benefit.
Working to show up for your friend during this time already says a lot about your character, especially if they are reluctant to accept help and support right away.
However, while there’s a lot to be admired in supporting others, this should not come at the expense of your own well-being.
As such, you should be sure to cater to your own needs during this time too.
For example, if you find yourself having a lot of difficult conversations with your friend, be sure that you properly decompress and deal with your emotions after the fact.
There are many different ways to do this, whether through self-care or even exercise.
It is also important to remember that this is not a task you have to take on alone.
There are likely other people who would be happy to step in and help support your friend, reducing some of the burden on your shoulders.
Check if you can do this without divulging sensitive or confidential information.
